Why Is It Rude To Point Fingers?

Pediatricians evaluate the level of intellectual development of a baby by asking them to point. And so we are taught that it's a perfectly natural gesture.

But children are confusingly taught that it's rude. And many adults believe this.

This possibly dates back to the time to when pointing was considered a gesture made by witches to curse their victims. To point a finger would mark you out as a witch.

Thus pointing is often a negative gesture when used to refer to another person. Authoritarian, aggressive or accusative, it has become a sign of a badly brought up person.
