What Is Dysmorphobia?

The causes of dysmorphobia, a self-image disorder, are unknown and it affects men and women.

Dysmorphobics fear being ugly, have imaginary physical defects and believe that everyone sees only their "defect" and finds them repulsive.

The main symptoms are:

- obsessed with or avoidance of mirrors
- hiding the "defect"
- many doctor appointments
- depression, anxiety
- withdrawal from social / public life
- poor levels of attention, nutrition and hygiene.

It's impossible to reassure a dysmorphic, they will not believe you.

Not even cosmetic surgery is effective, the anxiety is often transferred to another part of the body.

The only treatment is to reduce anxiety.
