Why Is The Dove The Universal Symbol Of Peace?

In Genesis a dove gave Noah an olive branch to show that the Flood was over. It represented the end of chaos, peace, harmony, hope and the return of happiness.

A modern connection is attributed to Picasso. In 1949, the Communist Party commissioned him to deisgn a poster for the World Peace Movement Congress.

He used the profile of a dove and the poster was used all over the communist bloc countries of Eastern Europe.

Eventually, this symbolic image of peace spread to the rest of the world.

He named his daughter, also born in 1949, Paloma, Latin for "dove".
