As weeds which sting nettles have a bad reputation. But once heated they do not sting and have many medicinal properties.
When drunk they act as a diuretic which irrigates the kidneys and bladder and can soothe an inflammed prostate. A nettle poultice relieves arthritic pain. As an anti-irritant they sooth acne and can be used as a mouthwash for mouth ulcers and gingivitis.
Nettles are rich in vitamins A, B and C and iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus making an excellent dietary supplement.
An appetite suppressing nettle, courgette and onion soup is great when drunk hot or cold.
